Position Overview

Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist position at Central Virginia VA Health Care System in Richmond, Virginia. The role requires fellowship training in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and expertise in transesophageal echocardiography.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide anesthesia for cardiac surgical procedures including arterial puncture, TEE probe insertion and interpretation, intra-arterial and central venous line placement, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, and bronchoscopy.
• Perform preoperative evaluations, obtain informed consent, and manage postoperative care in PACU including ventilator and hemodynamic support.
• Deliver MAC, regional, and general anesthesia for ASA class 1-6 patients.
• Provide on-call coverage and airway management for critically ill patients.

Qualifications

• Board certified in anesthesiology with fellowship training in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
• Full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory.
• U.S. citizenship required.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Facility Details

Central Virginia VA Health Care System is a level 1a 349-bed facility affiliated with Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. The center offers primary through tertiary care including surgery, neurology, intensive care, and polytrauma services. Residency positions in anesthesiology are shared with VCU.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range $385,000-$400,000 per year. Retention incentive of $80,000 per year after 90 days with satisfactory performance. Benefits include 50-55 days paid time off, traditional federal pension with 5% 401K match, federal health/vision/dental insurance, $1,000 annual CME reimbursement, and free malpractice coverage with tail.

Variable work schedule with on-call coverage as requested by the Chief of Anesthesiology.
